Default Backing up in vista

Hi all
I'm trying to do a complete backup through visa onto an external hard drive.
I've been using the back up wizard but about a third of the way into creating
the shadow copy i receive an error saying that the shadow copy has timed out
any help would be really appreicated

Do you have the external drive formatted as NTFS? If you don't, you will not
likely get a full system backup - as fat32 will limit you to a 4 gig file
size. Vista backups are usually larger than 4 gig.

Do you have sufficient free space on the external hard drive?

If the drive is a USB drive, do you have the drive properties set for
"optimize for speed"?

Have you run chkdsk on the external drive to test its competency?
