I have Vista Ultimate, and had it installed on a previous machine quite some
time ago, where it also was activated, but I had so many problems that I
deleted it and reinstalled XP.
I now installed Vista U on a different machine, but when I tried to activate
it, it wasn't acceptable. However, I managed to get it activated over the
phone, but a curious thing I noticed was that the guy said that this was an
activation for XP, and not Vista. As it is impossible to get anyone live to
talk with on this phone, I couldn't get clarity on the issue. The product was
activated, but why did he say that I was activating XP and not Vista
Ultimate??
Any thoughts or facts on this would be appreciated.

He was clueless? People aren't chosen to work in call centers because
of their technical knowledge or ability, but rather for their capacity
for sitting in a tiny cubical for hours, repeatedly answering the same
questions over and over again by reading from a script.
"I believe the 'XP' part is due to the fact that Microsoft are still using
the XP activation lines for activaing Vista - maybe one day they will get
round to chnaging it :-)"

I agree with your sentiment, but the guy sounded like a recorded response to
every and any activation, and so I wondered whether Microsoft has different
recorded responses to the different OS's based on the numbers you have to
punch in before you get to the actual activation process, or is it the same
for all OS's ??

Ah! That sounds like the automated activation line, then. I thought
you'd spoken to a real person. In this case, I'd go with Andre's
explanation.
Hehe, I know!

Mine was the same using automated phone activation. The woman's voice said
'we are going to activate Windows XP'
