Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer
to openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in
the Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users
and businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report.
Taiwan-based Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after
HP, Dell and Lenovo.
"The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.
I understand where his comments are coming from. Can you really argue with
the fact that Vista isn't generating PC sales itself. People aren't rushing
to buy PCs just to get Vista. And manufacturers (ie. ACER) who count on other
peoples' products (MSFT) tend to get frustrated when those products aren't up
to snuff. Welcome to the windows world.

That's because people don't need it. It's not the 1990's anymore. To most
people Vista offers little additional benefit. Even added security is of
little incentive. Those who know about security already keep themselves
protected and are annoyed by stuff like UAC more than anything else. Those
who don't keep themselves protected probably don't even understand why
they need to in the first place or they'd already be doing it.
And no matter what, Vista doesn't make someone read & write e-mails, write
a standard word document, or browse websites any faster. The best that most
people can hope for is that it works as well for them as XP has. So why
should they take the risk?
Also, why buy a new PC, regardless of Operating System, when the current
one that most people have probably does all they need? Does one really
need a quad core processor to do most tasks? No...
I don't honestly even really notice a significant difference between my
dual core and my P4 in most areas. Some apps sure, high end mechanical
engineering apps and such it makes a difference. Compiling one of my
projects with a few hundred source files it makes a difference. Some high
end games it makes a difference. But other than that? No matter how many
cores, I couldn't write this post any quicker.
Now don't get me wrong. I am not saying anything against new technology. I
love new technology. I am just simply saying that the need to upgrade just
is not there anymore like it used to be for most people.
It the cost. Most people, unless they want a new computer stick with what
they have. Very sensible.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, none of the know it all MVPs seem to want to weigh in on
this one????????
I have an Acer and I really like it, but I have had problems with Vista
on it. I've had to contact them several times - so maybe they are
annoyed - I know I was... but they have been great! Unlike HP who as
far as tech support have been ridiculous to me. I would buy an Acer
again...
I have an acer notebook with vista.. haven't had any problems at all with
vista on it.
Better than the vista install on my HP desktop....'

It's already been mentioned than Lanci is freaked by his
warehouse full of obsolete hardware.
