I got a USB hardware with its own hardware driver. After I have
installed the driver in Vista and connected the hardware with the
computer, the OS detected the existence of the hardware and prompted
"Found New Hardware" window on screen. There were three options for me
to choose (a) Locate and install driver software, (b) Ask me again
later, (c) Don't show this message again for this device. I selected
(a) and it turned out the OS looked for the driver in Window Update.
In XP I can choose a list of installed drivers instead of recommended
drivers by Windows at the first place. In Vista I couldn't do so. I
have to first let the OS to install their recommended driver from
Window Update and then I go to the Device Manager to update the driver
myself. It is quite cumbersome.
Re: About proprietary hardware driver installation
Let Vista do its thing, let it install its drivers. Its possible that the
driver for the USB drive might be older or does not have certain updates to
guarantee 100% compatibility under Vista.

Follow the installation instructions provided by the device's manufacturer?
