Default Windows Livve Messenger

I installed Live Messenger last week on my notebook running Vista Basic. Went
well until I tried to change Alerts & Sounds then found the option to choose
sounds was greyed, therefore not available- the panel displaying sounds was
blank and greyed. Have re-installed but it stays the same. Please can someone
tell me how to get this "sound" option back.
