vista reboot

Hi, i have windows vista on my machine, i must have installed some software
that has messed up my system, i keep getting the blue screen.
everytime when i reset the machine, i have to press f8 then select that
option: last known configuration'. this is the only way to start it,
otherwise the blue screen appears.
I feel that the only way to stop all this, is by doing a system reboot where
my hard drive will be formatted and installs the OS from scratch.
i orginally upgraded vista from XP when i have a student account with my
univeristy, but then i had to pay approx £200 for a new product key but i
have not got a vista CD.
Please help me

You paid over $300 for a product key only? You got ripped off. Call the
people you bought that product key from and demand a Windows Vista DVD.
Unless there is a restore partition (which I doubt from your post) on your
computer, you are probably *******. You need to do a clean install of Vista
and you can't do that unless you have the DVD. You can buy a Vista DVD on
Amazon.com, and several other sites, for half of what you paid for a product
key only.

i had no choice of buying the key, this was becuase when i put the machine
on, there was a screen that was saying i had to buy a new key to continue
with the start up.
why has vista got so many problems? are the updates needed?

Yes, in my opinion, you got ripped off totally. Contact the person(s) who
sold you this product key and demand a Vista installation DVD. If they
won't give you one, go over their heads. You say you bought this key from
your university. Go to Administration and demand assistance from them.

Vista has no more, and no fewer problems than any other operating system
only a year old. You absolutely need to keep updated! As I mentioned, in
my reply to your post below, you can purchase a copy of Vista for about half
of what were charged for a product key only.
