Vista Premium supposedly already pre-configured for Ultimate Upgra

Hi there

I've recently purchased a new Sony Vaio laptop that comes with Vista
Premium. I have just purchased the upgrade for Ultimate through the link in
Windows (Anytime Upgrade). Before I purchased the upgrade, the Windows
Anytime Upgrade screen on my computer informed me that I did not need the
Antime DVD, as it has already been pre-configured for Ultimate by the
manufacturer (Sony). However when I run the small file that prepares my
computer for the upgrade, instead of activating my already pre-configured
version of Ultimate, it instead tells me to insert the Anytime DVD.

I rang the Sony Anytime Upgrade Technical line to query this. They said
this has cropped up a couple of times. They said customers in this position
put the disk in when prompted and it installed fine, even though their
machines (like mine) stated the Anytime DVD was not needed!

Should I go ahead and insert the Anytime DVD even though my computer tells
me I don't need it??

Yes.
If you still have doubts, call Sony support again and get a 2nd
opinion from another of their techs.

Stuart,

Insert the DVD when the message comes up. I just successfully completed an
upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate using Windows Anytime
Upgrade. Of course there were multiple issues.

Please see the post - Vista won't complete installation by blank. I have
included all the 'things' I needed to do before I successfully completed the
upgrade.

I wish I had this information when I upgraded my Sony Laptop about 3 months
ago from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate. I ended up doing a 'clean
install' and spending hours reinstalling my applications.

Hi Jody, thanks for the response.

I'm waiting for the Anytime DVD to come in the post, but will follow your
advice as stated. My only query is when you say Monitors – Disable or
Uninstall device, how will this not affect the upgrade installation? If I've
disabled the monitor, how can I run the upgrade file and then Anytime DVD?

Maybe I'm being thick, but am bit confused by this!!

Hi Stuart,

Sorry for the confusion :>)... In the overall scheme of things I don't think
changing the Monitor settings will really make a difference. I just used
device manager to disable the device and it reverted to a standard PnP
monitor driver.

I would go ahead and try the upgrade without doing this step. I think the
important 'stuff' was disconnecting ALL USB devices and disabling those
devices with the storage controller and uninstalling the Windows components

Have fun with the upgrade.
