Vista Not Registering MS Office 2003 / Default Program Problem
Hi - I have googled this question and searched here but have not found
an answer. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I installed a legal OEM copy of Office 2003 on a new Vista Home Premium
(32-bit) Dell. The programs apparently did not correctly register with
the OS during installation, and among other faults can't be selected as
default programs for various operations (such as the 'URL:mailto'
(http://www.vistax64.com/mailto) operation).
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling/repairing Office, and have
even tried repairing the OS installation, and have fiddled around with
the registry, but have not been able to solve the problem. Any
tips/suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Do the Office 2003 programs function?
Have you configured Outlook?

All Office apps function, though I had to manually hack the registry to
stop the ELU pop-up.
I have configured Outlook so that it thinks that it is the default mail
program.
The URL mailto function governs what happens when you click on a link
in a web page that has the HTML code "mailto" which is supposed to
invoke your default mail program. I can't change it from Windows Mail
to Outlook because Outlook (like Word and Excel) are not registered with
the OS and therefore don't appear as programs in the default program
list in Control Panel|Default Programs.
