Default Upgrading to Vista x86 Ultimate

Greetings, before I do this I need to know alittle info if you may help
me.

At the moment I have a 32bit Windows Vista and I'm wanting to upgrade
to the full 64bit Ultimate edition. Is it possible to upgrade by
emulating the image with deamon tools or alcohol 120% or does it have to
be on a dvd?

Also would it be best for a clean install, or is it fine to upgrade, as
I've spent the last few days redownloading apps and games I want on my
comp.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

Lost.

Hi,

There is no upgrade path from x86 (32-bit) to x64 (64-bit), it is clean
install only. Therefore, you cannot use an emulator and must do this from a
DVD. Programs and such will need to be reinstalled.

I just upgraded from XP to Ultimate 64 last week. Just to add to
above.. you can still use the "Upgrade" version of Vista but you will
only be able to perform a clean install with it.

As such, when you put your upgrade disc in the drive it won't autorun
the installation from XP. Instead, you will need to boot the machine
with the Vista install disc so make sure your BIOS is set to boot from
the CD. When you get to the install menu, you will see that "upgrade"
will be grayed out. To clean install you select the other option (which
I think is called "custom"). It is also at that screen where you load
any RAID drivers you may need.

My "clean install upgrade" worked great and Vista found all the
drivers, etc.

Good luck

There is no upgrade path. Since it's a full version of x64 Vista you can
install it with x86 Vista installed or onto a clean hard drive. If x86 is
installed, boot from the x64 DVD. The installation routine will only offer
a custom install (no upgrade). The old installation will be wrapped up into
the Widows.old folder. You can copy data from that if you want, but make
sure there is an independent full backup of the important data. You could
run WET on the x86 installation, save that data to DVD or an external drive,
then use WET to bring the data and settings back in the x64 installation. I
wouldn't rely on WET as the only means of data transfer. Make sure there is
an independent backup.
