I have a laptop with Vista Home Premium OEM edition preinstalled on
it. However, it is in Russian and I would much prefer an English
edition.
My friend has Vista Ultimate Retail edition DVD. If I install that on
the laptop, and type in my product key on the sticker at the base of
the laptop, will it install a Vista Home Premium in English?
(I heard that all Vista media is the same, per language, and only the
product key makes a difference to the type installed, e.g. Ultimate or
Home or ...)
If not, what is the best way to change the base language of an OEM
Home Premium??

The key on the base is specific to the OEM version installed, so Ultimate is
not going to work with your key

XP and previous OSs did not have this; each disk was designed for what was
installed specifically.

Mick, actually it isn't even limited to retail editions. The OEM pack dvds
are just straight Vista dvds as well. Except for the hologramming they are
the same as the ones in the retail boxes. I have upgraded XP Home SP3 to
Vista Home Premium with an OEM pack dvd and an upgrade product key. I have
clean installed Vista Home Premium with a retail dvd and an OEM product key.
Vista dvds are just plain generic.
Thanks for that bit of info, Colin!

Thanks for the information. I did try it and found that Ultimate DVD
does indeed contain all editions, including English Home Premium which
is what I needed.
Unfortunately - on the second boot, the computer bluescreened with
STOP: 0x0000012a (0x00000002, 0x00008002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) and
message "Windows did not find any installed, licensed language packs
for the system default UI language."
So it looks like my key on the base of the laptop is not only contain
information for Vista OEM, Home Premium but also language Russian.
Very annoying that it has this restriction.
