ReadyBoost Prevents Bootup

I have a Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4GB USB flash drive on a HP AMD 64 X2 Dual
Core running Vista Home Premium 64-bit with 4GB RAM. I insert the flash
drive, it is accepted for ReadyBoost, I assign the recommended 3810MB to it
and all it well.

When I reboot, after selecting Vista (dual-boot with XP Home Entertainment),
nothing happens forever until I remove the flash drive. Then Vista boots
right up. I've reformatted the flash drive in both FAT32 and NTFS - makes no
difference. Changed boot sequence to HDD first - no difference.

Try lowering the size of the ReadyBoost file to about 2GB and see if that
helps.
Also what model Cruzer do you have? The speed of the model you have may be
marginal for Ready boost even though it passes the test.
Does an F8 safe mode boot also fail?

Thank you, JW! That did the trick. However, this time I let the PC sit for
about 10 minutes just to see if anything would happen - and it did. Now I'll
go back, move the file back to 3.81GB and see it that works, too. In the
past, I only let it sit for a couple of minutes before yanking the USB flash
unit.

BTW, I'm using the identical Sandisk flash drive in an HP Slimline AMD 64 X2
Dual processor with a slower clock speed and only 2 GB RAM, at the full 4 GB
(3790 MB) and there is no delay there. Maybe on the first use it takes 10
minutes?

Anyway, at least it now seems to work OK. Thanks again!

Curiouser and curiouser. I moved the ReadyBoost file size back to 3.81 GB
and rebooted. This time it took about 5 minutes to come up. Rebooted - took
about 4 minutes. So, it seems to work, just bootup takes forever. And the
flash drive is not lighting up during this period of nothingness, so it would
appear no activity. Yet, if I remove it, Vista starts up immediately (the
caterpillar appears right away).

i plug inmy usb drive, it says i need some new software or a disk, my drive
didnt come with any of that what shouldi do?

Might help if you say the make and model of the USB drive.
