Hello,
if I use the upgrade version will I be able to do a clean install or will I
always have to have a previous version of windows installed before I can use
vista? I am just wondering as I would like a clean install and am afraid I
cannot get that with the upgrade? Thanks in advance!
You can use the upgrade version of Vista to perform a clean install on a
formatted hard drive. The internet is full of articles that document this
procedure.

In addition to Ronnie's advice, you can achieve a clean install by using the
custom install option when started from within an existing XP/2000
installation.
