Default Partition Problem

::i just install vista x64 on RAID 0 (2 X 250 Gb) volume. Volume space
is 465 GB (instead of 500 GB! that’s alright), free space 451 GB, so it
took 14GB on OS and Page File. Now i want to partition it and want to
allocate about 100GB for system drive i think which is more then
enough.::

::But the problem is, on Disk Management when i select the volume and
click shrink Volume i get followings::

::Total size before shrink in MB: 476943::
::size of available shrink space in MB: 235606::
::Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB: (235606)::
::Total size after shrink in MB: 241337::

::so i can't shrink the volume less then 241337. that means it forcing
me to keep the system drive about 235.68 GB! which is about the size of
one of the hard drive (232.8 GB). So... what is going on? why its
forcing me to keep the volume that large??::

Sounds as though you have one or more unmoveable files stuck out there
in the partition. Three solutions:
1. Get a good partitioning program. Acronis seems to be the best. It
will move files that the built-in Vista partitioner will not.
2. Get a good defrag program that can/will move system files with an
offline defrag. Try PerfectDisk or DiskKeeper. Diskeeper is faster
and better with online defrags, but PerfectDisk is *much* better at
doing offline defrags.
3. Remove your paging file (pagefile.sys) and any hibernate file
(hiberfil.sys). Then defrag. Then try shrinking your partition.

Default Re: Partition Problem

Since you just installed Vista, do it again. This time create a 100GB
partition during setup, and install Vista in it.

Thanks for your reply.

1. I don't know what partitioning program is good for vista x64. Notorn
Partition Magic seems doesn't works
2. i don't think it because of junk file or someting.... as i said i
just installed the system i didn't install any other software yet. but
since u said i tried that. still same problem.
3. i don't understand why i have to remove pagefile?? it just about 2
GB in size, i'm willing to throw 100 GB for system dirve. i'm sure page
file and all other vista junk will essily fit into that. but the problem
is, it doesn't allow me to shrink less then 250 GB!

i think it is someting to do with the RAID...

Thaks again for your help

Thanks Andy.
you mean the option i get at the time vista installation?
unfortunately, i can't do that either. i mean at the step "where do u
want to install windows" i can see the RAID volume i have created using
Intel matrix, total 463 GB. and the options "delete, Format, New,
Extend" are inactive. only Refresh and load driver is active... so i can
not create partition on that step. i tried by loading new driver from
Intel... but it didn't make any difference ( i tired new installation
again).

Probably it will solve the problem if i can create the partition when i
create the RAID Array, now i don't know it is possible using Intel
matrix, and if it is.... is it gona decrease the performance of RAID

First Format C:
Then later get hold of *Acronis Disk Director Server*. Works like a
charm here. Helped me out several occasions in time of trouble.

There are several things that can cause this problem. Turn off pagefile,
turn off restore points and turn off indexing. reboot and try to
repartition again. You still might not get down to 100GB for C but maybe
close (mine got down to 136GB). After repartitioning you can turn those
things back on if you want. Vista will reserve up to 15% of the drive
for restore points alone. If you need more help with repartitioning this
might help:

Hope this helps.

all i have is c: drive combining to hard drive. if i formate c: where m
i gona run *Acronis Disk Director Server *from?

Rum from some other hardrive, or things like boot disk?? i don't think
thats a good idea coz i'm talking about RAID volume here. for instence,
win xp setup doesn't even recognize the volume!!

Did you read the tutorial? "WARNING: The size of the available space can
be restricted by the amount of space currently allocated to on the hard
drive for the page, System Restore, shadow copy, and hibernation files.
The location of the files on the hard drive plays a big part here
because these files are marked as unmovable, and Disk Management is
unable to relocate them. As such, if these unmovable files are located
in the middle of the total amount of free space on the disk, then only
the amount of free space on the other side (to the right) of these files
will actually be available for the new partition. This will result in
you showing that you have x amount of free space, but not being able to
use it for your partition. The only way around this is to use a 3rd
party hard drive partition management program, or setup the partition
when installing Vista.
If you wish to force the partition to shrink, then see: the How-To
Geek: Working Around Windows Vista's "Shrink Volume" Inadequacy
Problems"

Thanks Gray. I didn't read the other tutorial "the How-To Geek: Working
Around Windows Vista's "Shrink Volume" Inadequacy Problems" sorry about
that .

Now its kinda make sense...

i'll try 'Perfect Disk '
(http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/)and see if i can go around
the problem. Now my only concern is that using those third party
software, gonna ******* up my RAID or not.

and also, why Microsoft made such a dumb utility like disk management,
that cann't even move its own file! this is ridicules...

::Thanks Again.::
