I am trying to install Vista .. my video card is an Nvidia 6600GT. I used
the upgrade advisor and it did not find any problems with my video card or
monitor.
I can complete installation until the final step when it resets. Then upon
final (?) reboot, it stops and the monitor says the following:
OUT OF RANGE
VGA in : 1024 x 768
H Sync: +68.5 KHZ
V Sync: +84.7 HZ
Clock: 184 MHZ
I am doing a clean install on a new hard drive, so no drivers are loaded
from my current XP install.
what the heck is going on and how do I fix it??

After it does this see if you can do an F8 safe mode boot and then make sure
that our PC desktop resolution is set to 1024x768 (@60) if that is the
native resolution of you VGA connected monitor before you try a normal boot.

Thanks for the help .. . unfortunately, when I go to safe mode it says that
"windows is unable to complete the installation in safe mode"
so I guess it's still in the final stages on installation I am
currently running my monitor at 1024x768 @75 in windows xp
when I am installing vista, it's on a second drive, so i unplug my current
one and let it boot up etc. not sure if that helps with anything. should
I set my rate to 60 in xp? even though that drive is not loaded when i'm
doing vista.

The problem is that your video card is putting out a display frequency or
resolution that your monitor cannot display. You could first try shutting
off the monitor and seeing if setup will complete (it likely has at least
one more reboot to complete at this point) or borrowing a standard CRT
(glass) monitor to watch setup complete.

Thanks I'll give it a shot .. I tried unplugging the monitor, but for some
reason it doesnt go any further, and when i plug it back in eventually to
check , it still says out of range. hmm
I'll give the replacement monitor idea a try

Did you reset the frequency to 60 since that appears to be the parameter the
monitor is complaining about.
