Made the dive to Vista 64 on a new build. It is on an Asus Maximus
Extreme with 2 gig of RAM and an 8800 Ultra video card. I setup to WD
raptors in RAID 0.
Everything with the install seemed to go without a hitch. The install
is from a Vista Ultimate 64 builders pack. The install starts with no
problems at all and it sees my raid array without installing any
drivers. The install does the copy, expansion and so on without a
hickup. It is after I enter a user name and password, date, etc and the
system initiates into its "performance check" when it completely hangs.
It never leaves the first splash screen of the performance check. I let
it sit for over an hour and still no progress. If I hard reboot it, it
comes up and wants a new id and password and computer name and
eventually goes in. After that it gets ugly with problems of wanting to
verify the vista installation after every reboot probably related to two
seperate initializations first of which is incomplete.
Any ideas of what is causing my initial installation initialization
problem? Can't hardly be drivers problems related to the raid since it
installed it without a hitch or am I being naive? Am going to try and
load the drivers from the Asus cd that came with the board when i get
home from work and rerun the install again. If that does not work I
will dismantle the raid and try the install to a single drive, etc.
Please let me know if you think it is something else entirely before I
blow alot of time on the whole raid trouble shooting avenue.
I assume this is a total "clean" install?(you know what they say about
assuming) Have you checked that your raid array drivers and setup are
useable on Vista?
It is a clean install ... brand new setup ... I am only assuming that
Vista was cool with its own dirvers for the raid since it showed up on
the list to pick from, installed and acted normal up until the
performance test.
I have downloaded the latest raid drivers today and will try that out
on a rerun of the installation just to rule that out.

Fixed my problem ... was memory related. Unfortunately I did two changes
prior to a good install so I am not sure which change did the trick if
not maybe both.
I had my ddr3 memory paired wrong on the board like a rookie ...
switched that and also changed a setting in the bios to correctly clock
the memmory at ddr3 1800 (it was set to auto).
