Ensure you have the very latest one form the apple site
Ensure you are running with an administrative level account for the install.
iTunes installs and runs fine on both x86(32-bit) and x64(64-bit) Vista
platforms

Please download and install the most recent release of iTunes, the version
in the box is likely several versions old: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

A mate of mine had the same problem this week, same error message with iTunes
from Apple.com(60.5MBs).
But the download from Apple was not completing.
I downloaded it on mine, copied to flash drive, installed on his with no
probs.
No idea why!
