Default How to use RESTART instead of SHUTDOWN to install updates

I use Vista Premium with Windows Media Centre (LOVE IT!) to record programs
at all hours of the day. I would like to be able to use RESTART instead of
SHUTDOWN for installing updates so that I can start the install before bed,
but not have the computer off all night. I have done searching but can not
find the answer. Thank you for your assistance.
