Eliminate Vista Boot Manager

I have XP on my C drive and put Vista on my D drive to try it out. I've had
too many problems to consider Vista as an alternative right now. So I
formatted my D drive to remove Vista but when I reboot, the Vista/Windows
boot manager still thinks Vista is an option. How do I remove this and have
it boot directly to XP?

Sounds like you need to edit your Boot.ini file.

Remove the entry for Vista...

For booting only to Windows XP...the file should
look something like the following:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

The simplest solution to this issue is to download, install in
XP, and run this program.

VistaBootPRO 3.3
http://www.vistabootpro.org/

Once you've launched the program, click on System Bootloader.
Select "Windows Legacy Bootloader".
Select "All Drives".
Hit the "Install Bootloader" button.

Restart your computer.

The alternative procedure is to boot with your XP installation
CD into the Recovery Console and run the fixboot C: command.

John Inzers solution will not work. Your present boot up is not using
the Boot.ini. Try VistaBootPro, but you will probably still have to
insert the boot.ini file in the root if it does not exist there already.

The fastest way:

1. Boot to XP

2. got to a CMD prompt ( start à run à type cmd and press
OK (or run)

3. in cmd window type "cd\boot" (without the quotes!)

4. put DVD from Vista in DVD drive

5. don't let install run close that screen (red X right
top)

6. type "X:\boot\bootsect /nt52 c:" (where X is the drive
letter from the DVD reader)

7. reboot the PC it should load XP by default now (entry's
from Vista are gone)

I would agree with Nepatsfan that VistaBootPro would be the logical way of
removing the entry.
