Default Can't install Office 2003 Standard Edition in Vista

I'm running Vista Business Edition on my computer. I was upgraded from XP Pro
to this current Vista setup. I had Office Pro 97 installed before doing
upgrade. Then I bought the Upgrade Office 2003 Standard Edition. It installed
great and was running fine until I tried to install the new SP3 for Office.
It keep giving me error 779 or error 1913. I could not get this problem to go
away. So, like a dummy I figured I would un-install Office 2003 and try to
re-install again. Now I get this message asking to verify the location of the
mapisvd.inf file in c:\windows\system32 directory. It's there. The problem is
I can't change it, delete and neither can the Office install program write to
it. How can I fix this problem and get Office re-installed? This is on my
business computer.

Okay, I did it!!!! I read down further on the list and found out about how to
take ownership of mapisvc.inf. I followed his instructions and I deleted that
file. I went back and to my amazment it installed all the way. I even got SP3
to install. So, that's how I fixed my problem.

I just hope no one goes through what I went through. It seems that the
mapisvc.inf got corrupted some how and by deleting it I solved my problem.
