...For regular members.
I and I am sure a lot of other members of this board are working with computers and I think it would be pretty good to have an announcement section for heads-up and warnings for issues we have in our every day work life and hopefully it will help some of the visitors of the board before making a new post.
With time it will become a bit of a FAQ of announcements for common problems and solutions.
I have one for you right here that I've run into 3 times today from 3 different customers.
Toshiba Satelite built-on webcams with Windows Vista Premium doesn't work and returns an error saying the preview is locked.
Toshiba are working on a hot fix but nothing has been released so far.
A temporary fix is to go to the "Device Manager" and look for your webcam in the list of installed components.
Right click and chose to update the driver.
Chose the option of browse your computer.
Chose the option to chose from a list of driver vendor.
You should then see the driver for your webcam, Chose to install it and it will work.
The reason for the error is due to a software conflict between software such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and the software you use for the webcam when you are not using an Instant Messenger.
Wouldn't a section like this on the board be pretty good? I know there will be a lot of stuff posted that doesn't really belong there but I think having the moderators validate the post or something like that would work.
I think either adding a section to the existing wiki (Main Page - HTFC HowTo) or to the forums for frequently experienced issues would be a good idea. Overclocked has the ball though
Good idea!
We'll need to create the whole section for it - Wiki might do it but it lacks interactivity. It's very difficult for someone to add something to the problem/solution article - in Wiki you can modify articles easily but not comment/add something to it. The Vbulletin (our forum engine) is very good at being a forum but it's virtually impossible to use it for something other than that. What we need is some sort of content management system. Looks like it's time for HTFC 3.0 - I'll try to install some stuff soon and then we'll try it out as our new FAQ/reviews dedicated engine.
Me and some friends ran a similar board a couple of years ago and we tried to make this suggestion possible.
We kept it as simple as possible but ended up having everything TOO organized.
Kind of looked like this setup:
[Forum] Advent
[Sub Forum] Insert Random Model Here
[Sub Forum] Insert Random Model Here
[Sub Forum] Insert Random Model Here
And in those sub forums you had another sub forum for the hardware.
[Forum] Advent
[Sub Forum] Insert Random Model Here
[Sub Forum] Motherboard
[Sub Forum] Video Card
And so on, We had about 500 different models/brands but it looked decent and with a search function it worked out pretty well.
It would take quite a lot of space up to list them by models since there are many different models, many not being widely used, bearing in mind many are 'home built units, a good example is the empty Advent section.
There are the branded sections in the Usenet section although not listed by model, this leaves it 'open' for all models of that brand as well as all problems.
One worrying point could be had by taking a look in XP and Vista section you will find there are many post there are hardware related.. and yet many hardware problem is operating system related, it could well be said that many of these ought to be in the branded section.
True.
And about the Advent section I didn't know you had added one.
But I will start adding in there as soon as I can since I run into Advent systems on a daily basis.
I think that having multiple subforums is more Web 1.0 style, fortunately today we can achieve same goals much easier trough tagging - have a look here for the brief into - Tag (metadata) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia That's why the vbulletin forum engine (the one we currently use) is no good for the FAQ - we need something more advanced (vbulletin is perfectly adequate for the forum though). I'll do a test install next week to show you what I mean.
