Default Looking for replacement for CRT monitor

The last of my CRT monitors died and I have to switch to a solid state
monitor for my photographic editing.

The circa 2005 LCD things that I have (Dell 2405FPW and some others)
all have the problem that the color isn't the same across the screen
if I don't move my head.

I have seen this problem reported as the left side has a different
color than the right side, but in fact the color is the same across
the screen if you look from a distance or move your had parallel to
the screen so you are always directly in front of the point of
interest. Therefore, the problem is one of color change with angle
of view, not a problem with the backlight or the pixels themselves.

My normal working distance is less than 12 inches. I didn't have
any problems with my 19 inch and 21 inch CRTs.

I want to get a wide screen monitor. I want something in the
24 inch to 26 inch range; 30 inches is too big even if given to
me as a gift. I need 1920x1200 or bigger.

I can go to US$600 with no problem if the thing works for me, but I
don't want to spend that much money if it doesn't work.
I'm considering a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP 24-inch widescreen (for
about US$550.

Does anyone know if the Dell 2408WFP suffers from the angle of
view problem described above? Does anyone know of monitor that
doesn't have the angle of view or other problems, even if the cost
is up to US$2000.

Thanks.

You'll only get past 1920x1200 if you to to 30". Way too big for working at
12", though. In my opinion, anything larger than 20" at 4:3 resolutions is
too big for that close a viewing distance.

There are three general panel types for LCD montors - TN, VA, and IPS. You'll
see them as TN, S-PVA, S-MVA, S-IPS, or H-IPS. TN are the cheapest, and the
worst when it comes to color reproduction and viewing angle. VA are better
for both, but notably suffer from the type of color changing you're talking
about (the Dell model above uses a S-PVA panel). IPS panels are the best
overall, in terms of color reproduction and viewing angle.

It's no coincidence that TN, VA, and IPS is not only sorted by quality, but
also by price.

Here's a site you can look up the panel type for a monitor on:

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/panels.php

The manufacturers don't usually provide that information, for some bizarre
reason.
