I recently bought a HD 3870 from Sapphire and replaced the stock
cooler with the Thermalright V2 from my old graphics card (Radeon 1950
Pro). The problem now is that the small, passive and originally self-
adhesive RAM-coolers wont hold properly on the new card.
The question is : Do I even need to cool the RAM ? The stock cooler on
my old 1950 did not cool the memory and I seriously doubt if the
passive heatsinks decrease the temperature by more than a few degrees.
I have searched for some pictures of other 3870s on the web to see
what kind of cooling solution other manufactures use but in most case
one can't see if the ram chips are cooled or not.
I have an electronic thermometer so I could check the temperature of
the chips while the card is active. The only question is : How hot can
these memory chips get without taking damage ?
