That's the question, really. If you know how to solder, and can keep track of
which wire goes to which pin, then yes, you can do that. I've only personally
worked with 9-pin DSUB, which leaves a bit more room to maneuver, but it's not
really challenging.
Just make sure you get the pins right. Use a toner or a battery and
multi-meter to match pins on the intact cable, then do the same to match the
actual wires to the correct pin on the new end.
