Every time I start my machine, the background activities seem to go on
forever, making everything run at a snails pace. Checking in Task
Manager, I find the main culprits to be processes associated with
ThinkPad or Think Advantage.
Processes like; TPHDEXLG, TPHKMgr, tvt_reg_monitor_svc.exe, cssauth
are very active. Even when the activity cools down, I see those
processes are still active in the background whenever I open Task
Manager. Of course, the 'on-demand' AV keeps pace, checking their
every file read and write. Draining resources I'd like to put and end
to.
Is this normal? What could TPHKMgr have to do? I haven't set up any
Hot Keys that I know of. And the Registry Monitor, when no apps are
running.

How much RAM do you have? I recommend maxing out your RAM.

They should be, but shouldn't be consuming significant CPU resources.

AV should only be checking the opening of files that might be infected,
not every read and write. What AV are you using? I'm now recommending
(free) Microsoft Security Essentials.

See above.

Things you don't want can be uninstalled -- just stopping them is not a
good idea.
