Default To delete the recovery partition or not?

Hi all,
I have a ThinkPad X60s with a 80GB disk and would like to reclaim the
space
used by the recovery partiton (some 5GB).

Now I wonder what would I loose that way?

I don't use Windows, only Linux, so any Windows tools on the partition
don't concern me. I beleive there are some tools for checking the
harddisk,
but I think I can get those on a CD too, right? Anything else I might
need?

ps.
I'm writing this through google groups, I don't know why I can't post
through my news server.

My thoughts on your post: If you are commited to using Linux on that
computer, I wouldn't worry about anything on the hidden partition.
However, you could excercise two other options.... one, just back up the
hidden partition to a save place and store that... or do what I did,
just remove the original HD and install a new one. I went through some
hoops learning how to slipstream my original HD Thinkpad files into a new
XP installation CD, but it worked fine. You won't have to bother doing
that if you're running Linux.

Good luck.

I'd guess that your ISP's news server doesn't carry this news group...
I have that problem too, with my Bigvalley.net ISP .. supposedly they
use a newsserver service from Sprint... don't know why Sprint can't pick
up this group considering the other crap that shows up when I update
groups.

I'd make the recovery CDs before deleting the Win and recovery
partitions. Delete both then try restoring from the CDs to make sure
that they work properly. If you ever want to restore your system in the
future; you'll have the means to do so. You might want to do this if you
eventually sell the system.

I deleted everything, then restored a 10GB WinXP (which I hardly ever
use) and built several linux bootable partitions.

An alternate to deleting, and a great backup, buy a new drive and do it
there, I did this after the fact as I wanted an 80GB instead of the 40GB
that came with my T42. Drives are cheap, I just bought 2 500GB USB
drives for storing my DVD's and CD's on them - great backup for them.

I'd think that the X60 might not be affected by the following however,
when I attempted to backup the XP recovery partition on my
R31 I found that the resulting disk required a boot floppy --
not a capability in an R31. Someone at either IBM or Mickeysoft
******* up. (This was all before the sale to Lenovo.) If you value
having that backup on CD you might check for this.

Linux should sing on the X60. {:-)

I bought a new HDD and put in a dual-boot W98se/Suse system.
(I need a minimal capability to bring in MS-Office files--mostly
the stuff that's been mangled by MS-Exchange and is easiest to
deal with using Outlook. 98 is sufficient to get that job done and
save the data in a directory common to LInux.

As an aside, it looks like Longhorn will be playing more tricks
with Office files--Steve Balmer keeps us moving right along!!
