one drive for Mac & PC use ?

A friend wants to transfer files from her PC to her MAC. I suggested
just using a storage drive. But now the question arises: if it's
formatted to receive files from windows, and then plugged in for on-
going use with her Mac, will she need to reformat for the Mac use and
lose all her files? Any ideas?
