With any external drive you do need to happy that there is adequate
cooling.
From memory - so please correct me if I am wrong - not all Lacie
cases have fans.

Yes, this particular LaCie did have built-in cooling. I don't know
whether they all have it or not.

No, they don't. I have two of the base models, a 320GB and 500GB and the
design is very poor for air circulation. To make matters worse they use
Seagate drives which naturally run a little hotter than some other brands.
Not over confident in leaving them connected for long durations because they
do get very HOT to the touch.
One unexpected bonus with the advertised 320GB model though is that the
actual drive used is 360GB in capacity. Formats 330 odd GB if memory serves.
Not an off the shelf size you would normally see available. 180GB x 2
platters?

Ah yes, you never know when harddrive manufacturers order the
'special' batch, with issues specifically tailored to the spot market.
