My new Dell machine came with a media card reader in the 3.5" bay
which is attached via a cable and socket that I don't recognise.
I want to attach the card reader to my desk about 1.5m away from the
computer and so want a new cable (but don't want to buy a new USB card
reader) as the existing one is too short. So can anyone help me
identify this cable and connector?
I'm hoping its basically USB with a custom end then I hope it will
work at the end of a 2m cable (if I can figure out what cable it is).
The socket the cable is plugged into is the only one present on the
board. On the other side it connects to a header on the motherboard,
here are some pics of where it connects to the media card reader.
Re: identify this cable for a Dell media card reader
The blurry/overexposed pictures make it difficult to tell. (This is intended
more as an apology than as criticism.)
At a guess, the connection is to a 10 pin mainboard USB header. In
principle, you want an internal USB extension cable. You could use a 10 pin
one, or possibly a pair of 5 pin ones. (The headers support 2 USB sockets,
and they are independent.) However, the ones that I Googled up were only 12"
(30 cm) long, and intended for use internal to the PC.
It may make more sense to just buy an external media reader that uses a
standard USB connector. At least in the US, they are available online
(www.newegg.com) for less than $20. Does the drive on the Dell also include
a floppy drive? You may have trouble finding an external all-in-one that
includes floppies.
