Can anyone tell me if going through 5 hard drives in 7 yeas, same box,
is abnormal? I have lost an IBM, a Hitachi, and three Seagates. A
friend says there must be something else wrong, and that to loose so
many drives is abnormal.

Power supply? Some cheap power supply may be harmful and could be the
one killing your hard drives.
Another factor: any decent cooling around the hard drive? If your
PC's air tight around the hard drive and no air circulate around it at
all, you may be frying them.
Hi
i have also expresened it i lost 4 Cd rom and a hard disk all seagate.
this ia what happened. i was browsing then a virus attacked my
pc( Desktop ) Then i bought a windows cd to install windows unlimited.

to beging setup after i have scanned the hardisk on another computer.
i turned on my pc it was somking i qickly unplug the power cable. then
i checked out what was roung i found out the cd rom thas been damaged.
Then i touch a Cd writer to install from the pc i used to scan my hard

This is quite abnormal. I have systems running hard disks for more than 7
years, hard disk is Quantum brand.
I protected these systems and hard disks by buying a good quality surge
suppressor and make sure the hard disks are cool by installing additional
fans in the box.

Indeed. Personally I have lost one or so in a comparaple space of time,
while I have 6-8 active ones (in several computers).
So:
- How did they die? What error profiles?
- Heat?
- Vibration?
- Bad PSU voltages?
