Default what type of RAID array?

I'm bussy installing an old Proliant 800 with dual PII/450Mhz and
(amongst others) 4 x 9,1Gb SCSI drives.
Also installed an X461 array controller card
Use: print-/file-/webserver
OS: to be decided yet but I'can make a wide choice (both Windows and
Linux is various tastes)

What would be the best array type and what striping size would offer
te best performance/security?

raid5 will be slooooow on that machine.

I'd make two raid-1 arrays. That's about the best you can do.

What part of "print-/file-/webserver" did you not understand.

what part of slow don't you understand?

Are you hinting that an array on old hardware will be faster if
somebody calls the server "fileserver" vs "database"?

Guess I better make it an RAID1 with on-line spare (just have to put
in an extra HDD)
I've been testing some settings and have the feeling (no more than
that as yet) that it would be the best workable solution. 1Gb for the
webserver part will be enough and the remaining 12 is just about what
I need for the My Documents part in the LAN (5Gb would be taken by the
OS and it's applications)

Thanks for thinking with me, always good to hear about other points of
view ;-)

RAID 1 on the controller, RAID 0 if needed in Windows.

Software RAID0 on 2xRAID1 hardware arrays? Can be done in any type of OS
(except DOS, and such)...
