should I install the Exabyte driver for a VXA-2 tape drive?
I just got this tape drive to replace my Exabyte Eliant 820, and boy
is it fast! Whoosh!
Only problem is that Windows shows this as an "unknown device" in the
System Control panel. On the Exabyte web site they do have a driver
for Windows, but they say not to use it if you use backup software
that has its own driver. My backup software does have its own driver,
so I've been able to use this drive OK.
But Windows is always complaining about the "unknown" device, so I
thought that I could fix that by simply installing the Exabyte driver.
Any reason not to?

You should only use the Exabyte driver if you intend to use backup software
that does not provide it's own driver for it. If you want to use NT Backup
you'll need to load the driver. If you use any other backup software that
can talk to the drive without it, leave it out. Just ignore the 'unknown
device' in Windows, it does not harm your system in any way.
