I am using an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller card and have these two
identical drives which both are the same model ST32107WC (CFP2107E)
and neither which get detected under Windows XP neither under My
Computer or Computer Management (Disk Management) or Device Manager.
The SCSI card shows up under Device Manager with no issues and I am
able to go into the Setup Utility for the 2940UW card.
Further the Seagate drive shows up in the SCSI Disk Utilities
interface of the SCSI Setup Screen/Utility as ID0 but with no jumpers
set on the card to define the ID but I am assuming the SCSI card is
auto asigning the ID to ID0. But once in the utility sceen it won't
let me format the drive and gives me an error "Unexpected SCSI Command
Failed".
I am using a 68 pin cable with a single terminator already attached to
the cable. There are no jumpers set on either of the two drives.
Is the drive bad or is there some configuration that I am missing.
Please note that this is the first time that I am working with SCSI in
any context. Could the adapter I am using to fit the SCA drive to 68
pin be bad ?

you have an ID conflict. Two drives both set to ID0 = doesn't work.
you will need to add a jumper to one of the drives to set the ID to
something other than 0.

Sorry to mention but I am using only drive connected to the 68 pin at
a time. Also here is the details of the SCSI controller card error:
Target SCSI ID:0
SCSI CDB Sent 03 00 00 00 0E 00 70 00 0B 00
Host Adapter Status 1Bh
Target Status 02h Check Condition
Sense Code 48h
Sense Code Qualifier 00h

Thanks again for the help.
What I had done in the meantime is had tried out a third drive and for
some reason I tried out the second 68 pin connector on the cable and
guess what ? It worked and was detected by Windows XP. Then using the
same good connector on the cable I connected the other two drives and
they were detected and verified by the SCSI 2940UW card setup utility
as being good and further I was able to partition and format the two
drives mentioned above under Windows XP without any issues. So I
suppose the connector is bad on the cable ? A good learning experience
when things don't work out as expected.

Those cables are pretty easy to break, and you can't even see the damage
that isn't blatant- bent pin, tugged loose etc.

Thanks for the information again. It good to know that these cables
can break. Working with IDE and cables for about 10 years I cannot
remember having one cable break on me which was IDE and that I could
not visually see. So its kind of good to know that the first thing
that should be checked is the cable.
