Problem with Fujisu MO-Drive - 1.3GB medium can't be formated?
Hi all,
I have installed an Fujitsu MCM3130SS Magneto-Optical Disk Drive under
WindowsXP.
The drive is attached to an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller.
The drive is recognized as "Optical Drive" from WinXP.
When I insert a brandnew 1.3GB Disk and doubleclick the icon for
"Optical drive" it says "Disk is unformatted - Do you like to format it
now?" - Yes - "Disk can not be formatted".

There is some confusion because Microsoft use the term "format" for
different things. There is the real format (MS call it low level format)
and there is the filesystem (MS call it high level format). "Formatting"
a harddisk in current Windows versions means creating a filesystem. The
error message therefore means that the filesystem creation had failed.
Possible reasons:
- Windows don't support "optical devices" (SCSI device type 7)
- Windows don't like the 2048Byte blocksize of your medium
(together with "optical device" and/or your filesystem type)
I don't use Windows so the Windows experts may please correct me if
things above are not correct.
What you can do:
The MCM3130SS can identify itself as "direct access device" or "optical
device". Look at the installation manual: http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/COM...ss_install.pdf
The behaviour can be configured with switch SW1-06. "optical device" is
the default. To make the MCM3130SS identify itself as a "normal
removable disk drive" set this switch to OFF. Now try again.
If it still don't work enter the Adaptec setup with "Crtl-A" at boot
time and let the drive (low-level) format the medium. Now try again.
To make things look even more like a harddisk use a smaller medium. All
medium types up to 540Mbyte use the same blocksize of 512Byte as
harddisks. With that configuration you should even be able to boot from
the MO drive.
