Default Nightmare: ST373455LC + 29320ALP-R + 80 to 68 pin converter

Hello everyone,

I am new to the SCSI world, and I decided to start by buying a

ST373455LC : Seagate Cheeat 15K.5 hard disk, 80 pin
29320ALP-R : Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI card, 68 pin

to speed up my company database server.

Once I got all the hardware, I fastly noticed how impossible it is to
plug in the hard disk into the controller... so I went for eBay and
blindly bought a 80 to 68 pins converter like this:
http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=16088

Then I have connected the converter to my hard disk, plugged it into
power, and with the part of the SCSI 68 pin cable with the terminator,
and the other side in the SCSI card... but it doesn't work. When the
controller ties to detect the disk, it takes around 30 seconds, and
after that, it gives a timeout.

Am I doing something wrong? Do I need more hardware?

are you using a good SCSI cable, and one with a terminator at the end?

I am using the one that came with the Adaptec controller, a 68 pin
cable, with a terminator at the end. The side that is attached to the
controller has no terminator. It is shown that way in the SCSI
controller manual, so I don't think it's a problem with the connection
and/or the terminators.

So, that converter is the wrong one - it's clearly for single-ended operation
(look at the traces - if it was for differential operation, the traces would
be routed in pairs). Also, while it's hard to tell from the package image, the
supplied terminator doesn't appear to be for LVD drives either.

And I just noticed the disclaimer below the description:
"Not for use with LVD SCSI drives"

I'm betting you missed that as well ;-)

Call the vendor, see if they have the proper kit for an LVD drive, including a
proper terminator...

Thank you very much for your reply.

Sorry, but the link I gave above was not exactly the link to the
product I bought. My product can be seen at:
http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=180216346954

As you can see, in the page there are no references to LVD SCSI
drives, and it has not a Terminator.

But, I have noticed that my converter suffers the problem of "non-
paired traces".

I have just bought this converter: http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=150218921396
... and I hope this one will work. Am I wrong?

- Thank you very much for all your help.

Yeah, obviously that wasn't immediately apparent from the 80-pin and
68-pin disparity.

Of course, mistakes should come in twos and threes, else, what's the fun.

Like there are narrow LVD drives where it would be needed.
What really gives it away that it's not an LVD compatible one
is the narrow connector on it.

Bwahahah.
They get better and better, don't they, 'tripper.

To be honest, I didn't know SCSI had so many different buses. My bad.
I have learned a valuable lesson.

I knew people like you would appreciate my behaviour in eBay. Take
this as my contribution to your daily amusement.

I didn't know that, but thanks for pointing it out.

Just wait... I can do things in a much funnier way. I will try not to
dissapoint you.
