Default Help with tape drive cabling/termination

I have an Adaptec 39320A Ultra320 SCSI host adapter that I have
connected to an internal HP DAT24i tape drive.
Currently connected with an old 68 pin cable c/w active terminator and
a 68-50 pin adapter at the drive.
The tape drive is the only device on the cable.
Occasionally experiencing weird symptoms on the tape drive that
research indicates could be due to SCSI problems - i.e. drive needs
power reset to "wake up" etc.
The tape drive is set to SCSI ID 4 and TERM PWR is on.
The active terminator is at the end of the cable, the tape drive is
the connector before it.
My question is what would be the "ideal, foolproof" configuration for
this card/cable/drive combination?
I want to buy all new connecting components to eliminate the cabling/
termination as a problem.

Since that setup should work ok, things to try before you start spending
money:

* in the adapter BIOS, turn off wide negotiation for #4 (the tape drive
ID)

* ensure the cable is connected with the first connector at the card and
that the SCSI termination is set to "automatic" in the adapter BIOS.

* If the tape drive has a 50-pin connector, it's a narrow, hence single-
ended device. Is the terminator on the end of the cable LVD/SE
compatible?

Those 68-50 pin adapters can be troublesome, but I would not expect
problems with a single device on the SCSI bus.
