Default Which Dual-Channel SCSI PCI-X Controller ?

Hello NG,

after making the experience that my PCI-Controller (SYM53C896) didn't
work in the PCI-X-Slot of my new Mainboard, i'm looking for a Dual-
Channel-U160 (or U320) Controller for PCI-X. I need a dual-channel
solution, because i have internal U320-Disks and external UW-Dat und U-
SCSI-Scanner. So i need at least 3 connections of which one is only
single-ended-scsi and 2 connections for LVD.
Till now I found only the Adaptec 39160 and 39320 Controllers. Any
further suggestions ? The board is a ASUS P5WDG2WS-Pro.

with kind regardes, Stephan Weber

those adaptec cards have two channels and 4 connectors. Each channel has
one 68 pin internal and one VHDCI connector on the outside.

Are you able to daisy chain your tape drive or scanner or do you need two
external SCSI ports? Having to the the latter will ruin your internal disk
performance.

Why 3 connections for this? One internal for the LVD disks and one
external for the SE peripherals should be sufficient.

I use several of the single-channel version of those in servers:

LSI U320, see:

http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/prod...pters/scsi_hba
s/lsiu320/

and am very happy with them. They work MUCH better in Linux than the
Adaptec 29320 and are more reasonably priced.

Huh?

That doesn't really follow from the previous explanation(s), if not
contradictory.

The 39160 has a narrow internal connector as well.

Would this give a clue:
"So i need at least 3 connections of which *one is only single-ended-scsi*"
"and *2 connections for LVD*"

So likely not.

Not really.

That doesn't follow unless you need an external LVD connection as well.

Well, that's usually a problem.
On most single channel HBAs the dedicated SE connections are internal.
To use a single channel HBA you have to convert the dedicated SE con-
nector to external.

> should be sufficient.

What if he wants external LVD drives as well.
That's why he likely wants the dual channel, by lack of cards having both
LVD and SE external connections.

Neither have dedicated SE external connectors.
And both are LSI, like the offending SYMBIOS he already has.
