It's sort of weird to be connecting a tape drive to a RAID controller.
I bought a two channel as the server is not high volume. For the time
being, the library is running off the 2930CU. I wish to understand
what the issue is even if I end up leaving the 2930CU in place.

It should be supported by the card.

Maybe your driver has no tape support. In the documentation of the Linux
driver there ist the following information:
| Introduction
| -------------------------
| The aacraid driver adds support for Adaptec (http://www.adaptec.com)
| RAID controllers. This is a major rewrite from the original
| Adaptec supplied driver. It has significantly cleaned up both the code
| and the running binary size (the module is less than half the size of
| the original).
|
| Supported Cards/Chipsets
| -------------------------
| PCI ID (pci.ids) OEM Product
| 9005:0285:9005:0285 Adaptec 2200S (Vulcan)
| [...]
| People
| -------------------------
| [...]
| Deanna Bonds
| (non-DASD support, PAE fibs and 64 bit, added new adaptec controllers
| added new ioctls, changed scsi interface to use new error handler,
| [...]
I read this as that the Adaptec supplied driver has lacked non-disk
support and it was added later. This implicitly means that it must be
possible with this card (and why should the BIOS show the tapes
otherwise). Maybe Adaptecs Windows drivers are based on the same code.
IMHO you should ask Adaptec if their Windows 2003 drivers have tape
support.

It probably should work, but I have yet to see a config where a tape drive
is attached to a RAID card and works, unless it's an actual tape RAID
unit (yes, they actually exist). You could attach a scanner to a RAID card
as well, and it will detect it, but good luck trying to scan anything.
Same for attaching a hard disk to a SCSI based image processing card for
big scanners.

” Ultra 2 and above SCSI drives (including hard disk, tape,
CD-ROM, CD-RW, and Magneto-Optical drives) and jukeboxes.
See Mixing Devices on a Channel on page 2-3 for more details.
” Multimode termination.
...so it looks like the card can support tape. Do you know how I can
tell if my terminator is multimode?

not sure what a multimode terminator is supposed to be.

The 2930 you have your tape on is ultra-narrow, so your tape drive may be too.
It makes sense for RAID controllers to be LVD-only, so no ultra support.
I doubt they made any ultra2 CD drives. Were there many ultra2-narrow devices?

I rechecked the user guide for the 2200S. The manual states that the
2200S supports tape. It recommends using a different channel as I
have done.

This SCSI thing is very confusing. All ports/cables are 68 pin.
However, all are different sizes.
The library has a 68pin connector - the standard size I have seen on
all DLT drives.
2930CU has a HD 68 pin connector (smaller than the DLT)
2200S has a VHDC 68 pin connector (even smaller than the 2930CU)
I have installed the Adaptec Storage Manager software v2. I forced
the 2200S to 20mb. Annoyingly, this software can see the **** DLT in
the Library and Windows continues to not see either the Library or the
DLT in it.
