Default Twain

Twain drivers for my Canon 8600F are unavailable in Windows XP.
The scanner is identified but only as a WIA device.
If I try to scan into Acrobat 710 the WIA interface appears .I hit scan and
the GUI goes away with an error scanning stopped.
Any ideas?
TIA

1. Unplug the scanner from USB.
2. Insert the Canoscan Setup CD-ROM Choose uninstall the software.
2a. Remove the WIA drivers in device Manager. (If the uninstall does not
remove the WIA driver)
3. Install the Canon drivers from the Canoscan Setup CD-ROM that came with
the scanner.
Follow the instructions.

Choose the TWAIN driver if given a choice.

Do you know how to get into the Device Manager?
Did you run the UNINSTALL on the Setup CD?

To get into the Device Manager, Start > Control Panel > System. Click
Hardware tab, then click Device Manager Button.

For the scanner to show in Device Manager you may have to turn on the
scanner. If the scanner is turned on, you should see Imaging Devices, click
the plus sign, Right click the CanoScan item, Uninstall. Turn off the
scanner, Reboot.

Now that the WIA driver is gone, you should be able to install the TWAIN
driver.

Yes I do know how to uninstall the driver from the device manager.
Did all you suggested and still only have a WIA scanner in Acrobat.710 Pro
to choose from.
I get an message box during the toolbox install "stating an error occurred
while copying files".
I downloaded the latest uninstall executable and ran it.
I am now dumbfounded as to why I can not use a twain driver.
Maybe XP update did me in!!

TIA

Have you tested the TWAIN driver in a Photo editor?
Irfanview have a good TWAIN interface. (Plus it is free, get the plug-ins).
http://www.irfanview.com/

Did you try running the scanner wizard in Acrobat if it has one?

I am not familiar with Acrobat, although I do know Omnipage Pro 15.
Omnipage has a Scanner Wizard you must re-run if the scanner driver is
changed.

Whats happened is that you have not loaded the correct drivers and are
using the default Microsoft ones that come windows XP.

Go to the device manager and uninstall the scanner. or update drivers
and direct it to your install CD.

You will have to force the installation to use the canon drivers.

If that does not work try using install using Add Hardware in the
control panel. Let it search for new hardware etc and load off the CD etc.

For some strange reason a registry key"Canon" was blocked.I had to change
permissions for it and toolbox loaded as well as the twain driver.
Canons email assistance was superb for an out of warranty scanner and went
above and beyond.
Many thanks to all who helped and especially the Canon tech team!!

This is common with other vendors drivers -- same exact issues
trying to get an Epson scanner to work. Registry permissions.

(Didja know there were two different regsitry editors in XP? I do
now...)
