Out of curiosity, is there such a thing as a scanner which needs
no host computer running special scanner software? I'm thinking
of something like a networked scanner that can stash the scans
on a file server or something like that.
Even more important: Is there one that isn't fantastically
expensive? (In other words, cheaper than building such a
system with a dedicated windows server to run the scanner :-).
I'm hoping such a beast could provide a linux scanner solution.
I'm getting really frustrated with trying to find a scanner
that works on Linux. I had one, but it died, and they don't make
that model anymore. As near as I can tell, the folks at
epson who used to produce linux drivers died off, so basically
the only way to get a linux scanner is to buy obsolete
equipment on e-bay, and hope it works :-).

Unless I am missing something, why couldn't you use any modern
scanner under Linux with Vuescan?

Pardon me if I am intruding, but I run a CanoScanLIDE 25 on my
Mandriva System
uname -a yeilds:
Linux localhost 2.6.17-5mdv #1 SMP Wed Sep 13 14:32:31 EDT 2006
i686 AMD Sempron (tm) Processor 3000+ GNU/Linux
XSane works marvelously, as does Kooka. Personally I like XSane better,
but that's me.
I used to have a Visioneer OneTouch 6200USB that I used on my Win98
Machine. Quickbooks Pro explains the Win98. I run that machine with WinVnc,
through the network. It started giving me a "Scanner Locked" error, even
though it wasn't. The guide rail was mis-aligned due to age. The plastic
was breaking down.
Anyway I bought the Canon, because it was "supposed" to work with 98. That
was a nightmare, trying to set it up.
Then I thought "why not". I plugged in the USB cable and I have a Scanner.
I hope this helps.
