Default Scanning from webform

I am re-writing a departmental application that includes screens that
enable users to scan documents and save the images on a file server.
The 'old' version of the app is a VB6 standard exe. I will be writing
the app as a web based application (VB.Net Webforms). Our current
version uses Kofax image controls. These controls are placed on the
form and allow me to programmatically scan and detect barcode on
scanned image.
I need the same sort of functionality on a webform and Im looking for
alternatives to Kofax as Im not at all impressed with the level of
support from them.
Id appreciate any advice on controls or SDKs that would aloow me to do
what I need to do.

In the new version of the application I would also like to be able to
detect whether certain boxes have been ticked on forms that are
scanned so any advice on this would be appreciated as well.

Ive been developing businness applications for a number of years but
Im very new to scanning technologies so please dont assume I have any
but the most basic knowledge on this matter
