For several years I have been happily using my HP 4670 "See-Thru" scanner
for a "Digital Library" volunteer project, and this scanner is uniquely
qualified for the task at hand.
Immediately following auto update to SP3, my HP 4670 is no longer
accessible. WinXP tells it can see it, and reports all is well. But all
the applications I have been working with (i.e, PSP9 and full Acrobat 8),
can no longer communicate with it.
I tried a second computer in my home, also with WinXP SP3, and it too fails
in same manner. I have 2 of these HP 4670 scanners and both are no longer
accessible.
Sorry to state the obvious,
but have you tried a driver update from HP?
I am looking for a scanner that will archive A4 magazines
from the 50's black and white.
Care to expand on the suitability/experience of your model?

Yes, there are 2 updates from original drivers, and a WinXP SP2 update on
HP's site. The 2 updates did not fix the problem, The WinXP SP2 update
refused, "Incompatible with this version of Windows".

Outstanding! Which Is why I'm trying hard to get this 4670 working again.
I'm scanning original literature from the 1900 to 1930 period. As it is a
"See-Thru", just like a window, I can lay a rare book on my desk, then do
nothing more to it than turn the pages. Absolute minimum handling.
The scanner gets handled, not the book. See my results at:
I've been at this all day, trying to figure out why WinXP can see it,
pronouncing it healthy, but my applications (PSP9 and full Acrobat 8) are
unable "to communicate". Something within the SP3 update is blocking
communications with the scanner through any and all of my USB ports.

Hmmm, not bad,
I prefer my A4 sheets a little higher res, say 200-250dpi
for around 350Kb image, that an OCR reader will recognise.
I'll Google the machine for refs.
That's sure a different looking scanner,
how about using it as a flat bed, say for scanning
30 postage stamps, does it handle that orientation?
