What does that say about their security and operating system?

Yep, it's been more than a week and still no patch -I don't remember anything like that! Hopefully the patch will be out tomorrow - stay tuned (and use Firefox!): TechNet Security Center

Davy,
Your post makes it sound like Microsoft, themselves, have recommended an alternate browser. That's just not the case. Those recommendations come from the people at Trend-Micro and Spamhaus.
