Default Wireless adapter

I recently bought a wireless adapter because a good neighbor offered
for me to copy the signal from his wireless account. I am unemployed
and can no longer afford the service. Do I need any kind of access
code or password in order to get the signal or does it happen
automatically
when my PC is near a signal. Internet is important especially with
gas prices and me out of work I can multiply my applications online.
Thanks in advance.

I have a desktop pc and a laptop (wirelessly) connected to the
internet via a router.
The router signal ia password protected so that any one in the near
vivinity cannot use my signal to get on the internet.
When the family call and want to go on-line, they have to enter my
password to achieve access

I would presume your neighbour has a similar set-up, so you would need
his password

I'm no expert, hopefully someone will offer you more info
