For isntance, are there expiration dates and how do they correspond to
actual malfunction if exceeded?
I installed a Canon MP 600 a while ago and don't expect to need ink for
some months. But I will some day. Office Depot just mailed me a "get $10
off a #25 or more" ink or toner purchase, perhaps not as good as the last
one of "buy one and get one free" but perhaps more useful.
How useful depends on if I should be buying ink that I won't be using
until at least the fall. I have no feel so far for how fast Canons drink
ink, but always like to have the next replacement on hand for when I need
it. That wasn't so smart with my previous (Lexmark) printer because
nozzles of new carts teneded to dry out and needed a certain amount of
coaxing to work the first few times.

Because these are ink canisters and do not have an integral printhead they will
have a very long shelf life. Definitely months and perhaps a year or more.

I have used Canon ink inserts five years after purchase and no problems.
If the insert is in the printer itself,in the print head you may have to do
some maintenance cleaning after a few months of inactivity.

I refill and the bulk ink has a two year
expiration so if I would think a new never opened
Canon should do the same.
