Default Samsung ML-2010 prints too light

Hi,

My samsung ML-2010 prints too light. Is there anything I can do about
it. Is there some way to get Windows XP to over-ride the inadequate
setting on the printer itself?

I wonder have you got the toner save button on.... or check in the settings in the printer monitor window, usually a setting that allows you to lighten and darken text.

The text usually start to fade as the toner runs out, some Samsung laser are easy to refill, if it is because the toner is running out a little trick you could do...

... is to take the toner unit out, hold some newspaper over the drum end and give it a couple of shakes.

I had a ML1510 and was a real work horse being refilled a few times, when the drum gave up it Sammysung the last time so I went and got a ML3050.

Can't say how it is with other brands, but Samsung, it's cheaper buy a new printer than a toner unit.

The fading could also be a sign of drum wear.

If this has been this way since new, check that the printer doesn't have
a way to darken the toner level with a software adjustment or hardware
control. Make sure the printer isn't set in economy or toner saver
mode. Make sure the cartridge was properly agitated before installation,
or take it out and gently rock it side to side to even the toner out.
If it is doing this after having worked well previously, the toner level
may be low. Again, remove and try rocking the cartridge and reinstall.

If the printer uses a separate drum and toner cartridge, the drum may be
failing. If the printer has corona wires, make sure they are clean
using the tool usually provided.

Some printers have front panel "set-up" menus which require special
button presses to get to, which may alter darkness level and contrast as
well.

Check your printer's manual for the troubleshooting guide.

In addition to the helpful advice already posted, it is worth checking the
laser scanner mirror. I don't know this printer at all but if you remove the
drum cartridge and look into the cavity there will be a glass window, they are
usually about 7-8mm across and it will be anywhere between half the width of
the cartridge to the whole width depending on a number of factors. It will be
located either in the base of the printer or above the cartridge and it may
have a shutter that covers it when the cartridge is removed. If you can find it
clean the glass with a cotton bud or similar soft cloth.
The main causes of light printing other than settings are.
1. Low toner.
2. Ageing drum.
3. Dust or toner accumulated on the laser glass, especially if the printer has
been moved.
There are other causes but they are relatively rare.
