Preventing sticking pages when printing back sides

When printing the back sides of a pack of pages with previously printed front
sides in my old HP Laserjet 5L, often it draws in 2 or more pages simultaneously
which destroys the page order. Can I do anything to prevent that except buying a
duplex printer (which I also have done for my main residence)

Hi Victor. The one and only laser I ever owned was a 5L and it was
purchased specifically to do duplex printing. It showed exactly the same
symptoms that you described so I called out a service engineer who
fiddled with some of the settings in the printer hardware but couldn't
fix the problem. I got my money back as I had told the seller that the
printer had to be capable of (manual) duplex printing.

Multiple page feed is a common problem with the LaserJet 5L and 6L, and
other top-feed HP lasers.

Replacement pads and rollers can give a more reliable paper feed. I've
done that with a 6L, and I'm convinced these printers are just not worth
the effort.

If you do lots of double-sided printing, a duplexer is nice. If it's an
occasional thing, you just need a printer with a reliable paper feed.

I have bought a Kyocera FS-1030D which can print duplex for my main residence,
it has been in use only for about 7 months and works perfectly. The HP 5L is my
old but still well working previous printer which I have taken to my condo, so I
will play the duplexer here manually myself, means putting in one page after the
other manually for printing the backs.
