Pixma ip4200: Missing Transparency Paper option

I have been using my IP4200 to print onto transparency sheets using my
XP Pro computer.

I just switched over to a new computer with Vista Home Premium SP1 and
now the Media Type no longer has "Transparency Paper" as an option! I
reloaded the driver and even the Easy Photo Print Software from the
Canon support site, but still no Transparency Paper option.

Any suggestions as to how to enable this feature??

Is this an in-box driver that was supplied in the Vista OS box or a
program from Canon's website? Often in-box printer drivers have more
limited features. Am I correct that the previous driver which worked was
one from Canon and was an XP driver

I went to the Canon site to get the latest drivers when I got the new
Vista computer. I assume that that is the driver now installed (how can
one tell if it is Microsoft or Canon??).

The previous driver was installed on an XP machine using the Canon
install disk, so I assume that the Canon version was used (machine is
now gone).

I went back to Canon's site and tried to reinstall their drivers. I
even found a UK site with an "expanded features" driver. I tried that
too, but there is still no Transparency Paper option.

I have written to Canon and have not heard anything from them.

Transparency was dropped from later drivers for the IP4300/IP4500 models, so
maybe the same is true for the IP4200. If you can find an older driver
version, it might be there or might not.

The transparency paper setting is pretty similar to the "photo paper plus
glossy" settings in terms of what you get. I'd just try several of the
available types and see how it looks. In any case, you'll get identical
results by tweaking the manual color settings.

/ Control Panel / Device Manager / device / properties
lets us identify drivers by filename.
Right clicking on each of these and selecting / properties
lets us see on the panel / Version
the name of each software manufacturer.

OK, I'll try that approach. I assumed that the Transparency Paper option
reduced the amount of ink used as it would not "soak" into the paper.
However, as I now think about it, I usually had to skew the setting
towards a much darker output to get reasonable results. Perhaps that is
why they dropped the option, as it didn't work well anyway.

I still need it, though, so I will experiment. I just didn't want to
"hurt" anything by randomly selecting a paper type other than what I was
actually using.

Thanks for the feedback; it was more than what I got from Canon!

Actually, the transparency setting was ideal for a number of glossy photo
papers, I used to use it a lot.

I does sound like you installed the Canon rather than the in box drivers
from Vista. These are usually more complete than the in box versions.

I think you may have to wait to hear from Canon. It is possible they
removed the feature for some reason.
