Where could we buy or download this? We inherited an HP 5500 with no
book, and many operations that we'd assume would be simple -- like
making it print from the manual tray without 37 prompts, or telling it
to use a specific tray -- have eluded us for months. We're done
groping, it's time for some reading; but a long session of Googling has
turned up nothing.

It's on the HP web site. Unfortunately, HP likes to make their URLs so
long as to be unusable. So let's just follow how you can find this or
other HP manuals:
Go to hp.com.
Click on Support And Drivers.
Click "See support and troubleshooting information", enter "LaserJet
5500" in the box, press Enter.
Click "HP Color LaserJet 5500 Printer series".
Click on "Manuals".
Scroll down to find "HP Color LaserJet 5500 series printer - User Guide"
PDF.
