I have 2 printers - a Xerox laser with an old W2k machine on the network
as a print server, and an AllInOne HP 1210 connected via one of the
desktop main machines.
I have one XP laptop that prints fine no matter where I point it.
I have one Vista no SP laptop and one Vista SP1 laptop. Both of these
print fine to both printers from Notepad and Firefox, but neither will
print from IE7 to the HP device. They will print from IE7 to the laser,
but printing only starts after a good few minutes wait. This afternoon
it was 15 minutes, then the printer burst into life. It normally heats
up and prints within a minute.
All the desktop XP machines on the network print fine. I have no Vista
desktop machines
When the attempt to print fails, there are no error messages, and no
unprinted documents shown on either the source or target(host) machine.
I've tried re-adding the printer driver at the Vista end and setting the
IE properties back to default. I have restarted all the machines many
times. I need to run the Vista machines with that OS for testing
purposes.
A search hasn't thrown up much, and I can't see anything relevant in the
Event Log. It's the way that Firefox works and Internet Explorer doesn't
that has me confused. Has anyone any suggestions or is anyone else
seeing a similar fault ?

This looks like another issue with Vista. There are some idiots that claim that Vista has no problems. What a joke. hehehe....LOL!

Followed up myself to change the typo in the subject line and to say
that this is not an invitation to rant about Vista, however justified,
just an appeal for information.
I think there is a real problem in that most people who have slightly
more complex setups have avoided Vista, so someone saying they have a
similar setup that works would be useful too. Has anyone got an HP AIO
printer on a network via a machine acting as a print server, and can you
print to it from IE on a Vista machine?

There was a problem with IE7 and HP Navigator software, which HP was
supposed to have fixed.
The other issues that have come up recently is with Kaspersky, AVG and Avast
antivirus software. ALL of these three stop HP printers from working
properly with IE, but it's an issue with those applications, not with
printing in general, since other applications all seem to be printing
correctly. IE issues are dealt with by the IE team at MS, not the printing
team!!!
If you use one of the above antivirus softwares, uninstall it (temporarily)
and see if you can now print. If yes, think of changing A/V... I use NOT32
(www.eset.com) and have no IE printing issues, but then again, I do not have
any HP printers.

IE is real crap. Vista has problems according to reviews. The best
browser is Firefox.

Many thanks to Cari and to Arthur for the invaluable help.
To recap, I couldn't print from IE7 on either of 2 Vista machines to an
HP 1210 AiO printer running via an XP host machine on the network.
Printing from other programs and Firefox worked fine. All drivers were
up to date and all Microsoft updates applied.
Connecting a Vista machine directly to the printer made no difference.
Switching IE7 out of protected mode cured the problem.
Uninstalling AVG 8 also cured the problem.
It appears there must be some interaction between AVG and IE7's
protected mode that stops that HP printer driver from working correctly.
An internet search indicates that many HP printers exhibit the same
problem, but at least there are some workarounds, even if they are a bit
awkward.
I have replaced the HP 1210 with an HP C8250. Presumably this uses
different drivers as it prints fine from Vista + IE7 with protected mode
on and AVG8 installed.
The help from Arthur Entlich (re protected mode) and from Cari (re AVG)
was marvellous. I am really grateful, and hope that putting this info
together here helps someone else.
