Lexmark on dual line

We have a Lexmark x4270 (pnone/fax/printer) connected with our phone on
a single phone line to the house. Trouble is that both lines, even
though they are different numbers, ring at the same time and we can't
tell which number is being dialled from outside.

In the instruction manual, it says to select the Fax Setup Utility to
set the Lexmark to a different tone but, on selection of
'Connection/Dialling', this option is not available.

Can the ring tone be set any other way? Don't want to have another
phone line brought to the house, if possible.

Most FAX machines allow you to set it to Distinctive Ring (sometimes called
other things like Special Ring).
This works in conjunction with the telephone service you have. The service must
provide two different numbers on the same line, when the second number rings it
has a different ring sequence like long-short-short instead of the normal ring
that the first number has (which varies around the world). You have to make
sure your telephone provider has set the second number to have the distinctive
ring and you need to set your FAX machine to only answer that ring.
Be warned that most home mobile phones do not ring differently when they
receive a distinctive ring but some can be set to do that. However this will
not affect the way the FAX machine recognises the distinctive ring.
Conventional telephones, you know - the old type, do ring differently and you
will be able to hear the difference in ring tones.

part of your post! I understood that you have one line and two numbers, right?
If so, one of those numbers must have the didtinctive ring for your FAX machine
to work properly.
